Cervical Screening Clinic - Smear Test

At Priory Medical Centre, we are proud to support the NHS Cervical Screening Programme, a vital public health initiative designed to help prevent cervical cancer and save lives.

What is Cervical Screening?

Cervical screening (also known as a smear test) is a free NHS test offered to women and people with a cervix between the ages of 25 and 64. It’s not a test for cancer, but rather a test to help prevent it by detecting changes in the cells of the cervix which could, if left untreated, potentially develop into cancer.

  • Ages 25 to 49 are invited every 3 years

  • Ages 50 to 64 are invited every 5 years

If you’re eligible, you’ll receive a letter from the NHS inviting you to book an appointment, or a text message / email message inviting you to book an appointment.

Why is it Important?

Cervical screening saves around 5,000 lives every year in the UK. It is one of the most effective ways to protect yourself from cervical cancer. The test detects human papillomavirus (HPV), a common virus that can cause changes to the cervical cells. If HPV is found, further checks can be carried out to monitor or treat any abnormal cells early — often before cancer has a chance to develop.

What Happens at the Appointment?

The appointment is quick, usually taking no more than 10 minutes. A specially trained nurse will take a sample of cells from your cervix using a small, soft brush. While it might feel a little uncomfortable, it shouldn’t be painful, and the benefits far outweigh any brief discomfort.

Further information about the test cna be found here – https://priorymed.nhs.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Cervical-Screening-info-leaflet-June-2025.pdf

Workwell Project

Workwell Project

Led by our team of Social Prescribers, the Workwell project is a DWP funded project across Coventry & Warwickshire looking at providing early intervention to those have health barriers to employment and who may require additional support. This is a light touch, non clinical service where our Social Prescribers will initially discuss the project with the patient and then refer the patient into the dedicated service for further support.

In the support, the patient will have a Dedicated ‘Journey Guide’,whooffers coaching advice, helps understand and unblock health barriers to employment, provides a hollistic assessment & personalised care plan and then connects the patient to local services & support mechanisms.

The outcome of attending this support is hopefully returning too or moving into employment/training.

The Over 75 Health Check is an initiative to improve overall health and well-being in the community.

Its aim is to improve the care and support given to patients aged 75 or over. Priory Medical Centre is very supportive of the scheme and will provide Health Checks to improve early diagnosis and health screening.

All patients who are over 75 & registered as moderately frail, are encouraged to book a health check with the nurse.

The nurse will provide assessment and screening of your health and social care issues based on questions and measurements. Following this, you will receive personalised advice and if needed, an onward referral or signposting to appropriate support services.

NHS Health Check

What is an NHS Health Check?

The NHS Health Check is a free check-up of the health of your heart and blood vessels (cardiovascular health). It can tell you whether you’re at higher risk of getting certain health problems, such as:

During the check-up you’ll discuss how to reduce your risk of these conditions.

If you’re aged over 65, you’ll also be told about symptoms of dementia to look out for, as some types of dementia have the same risk factors as these conditions. You can also be given details of local services that help with dementia.

Who is the NHS Health Check for?

The check is for people who are aged 40 to 74 who do not have any of the following pre-existing conditions:

  • heart disease
  • chronic kidney disease
  • diabetes
  • high blood pressure (hypertension)
  • atrial fibrillation
  • transient ischaemic attack
  • inherited high cholesterol (familial hypercholesterolemia)
  • heart failure
  • peripheral arterial disease
  • stroke
  • currently being prescribed medicines such as statins to lower cholesterol
  • previous checks have found that you have a 20% or higher risk of getting cardiovascular disease over the next 10 years

You should be offered regular check-ups if you have already been diagnosed with one of these conditions. Your care team will be able to give you more information about this.

How do I get an NHS Health Check?

If you’re aged 40 to 74 and do not have a pre-existing health condition, you will be invited to an NHS Health Check by a member of our team every 5 years.

If you have not been invited for an NHS Health Check and think you’re eligible, please do ring the reception team and enquire about this check.

What happens at an NHS Health Check?

Your NHS Health Check will usually be done by a healthcare professional such as a pharmacist, a nurse at your GP surgery, or a healthcare assistant.

The check takes about 20 to 30 minutes and usually includes:

You may be asked to have a blood test at or before the NHS Health Check.

You’ll also be asked some questions about your health including:

  • whether any of your close relatives have had any medical conditions
  • if you smoke, and how much
  • if you drink alcohol, and how much
  • how much physical activity you do

Your age, sex and ethnicity will also be recorded.

Your NHS Health Check results

You’ll usually be told your NHS Health Check results during the appointment or soon afterwards.

You’ll be given your cardiovascular risk score, which shows your risk of developing a heart or circulation problem, such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes or kidney disease, over the next 10 years.

The healthcare professional may describe this risk score as low, moderate or high.

Everybody’s cardiovascular risk rises with age, so the next time you have an NHS Health Check your risk score may be higher, even if your test results are the same.

There are some things about your risk which you cannot change, such as your age, ethnicity and family history. But some of the most important factors in your risk score (such as smoking, your cholesterol level and blood pressure) can be changed.

Your NHS Health Check results will also be broken down into:

At the end of your NHS Health Check, you’ll have the chance to discuss your results and how to improve your scores, including where you can get support.

This could include talking about how to:

  • improve your diet
  • increase the amount of exercise you do
  • lose weight
  • stop smoking
  • reduce the amount of salt in your diet
  • reduce your alcohol intake
  • reduce your cholesterol

You may also be referred to local services, such as stop smoking and physical activity services, to help you make any changes.

Benefits of the NHS Health Check

The NHS Health Check aims to lower your risk of getting conditions that affect the heart and blood vessels, such as heart disease, stroke and kidney disease. It helps you take action to reduce your risk.

Having an NHS Health Check is important because many of the warning signs for these conditions, such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol, do not have symptoms.

The NHS Health Check helps you find out if you are at risk of getting these conditions so you can take action to improve your health. This could include making lifestyle changes or taking medicines.

The risk factors assessed during the health check are often shared by other conditions, including type 2 diabetes, preventable cancers and respiratory illness. An NHS Health Check could help you to reduce your chance of getting these conditions too.
